Kentucky Derby: The jockey who is too tall

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Long before he earned his firstKentucky Derbyride on Pavlovian at age 43, Edwin Maldonado had to overcome an unusual problem for a jockey.

Yahoo Sports

At 5-foot-7, he’s slightly too tall for his chosen profession.

“When I first started, you don’t know how to control your weight and it was very hard,” he said. “You do all the wrong things. You starve yourself. Drinking too much soda, sugar. But now I know what I can eat and can’t eat. It’s second nature.”

But in a sport where the riders need to weigh in at around 110-115 pounds with enough strength to control a 1,200-pound animal, nothing can kill a career quicker than height. But as Maldonado journeyed from small tracks in Texas, Louisiana and Canada before establishing himself on the high-profile Southern California circuit, he developed a skill that came in handy for the specific situation trainer Doug O’Neill encountered with Pavlovian.

Kentucky Derby odds

If you need a rider who can get a horse to start quickly, Maldonado is your guy.

“It was just a huge addition,” O’Neill said. “He’s such a good gate rider, and you’ve really seen the asset of that on Pavlovian since they teamed up.”

While trainers typically want more decorated jockeys in the biggest races, O’Neill has historically had a different approach. In 2012, he gave the relatively inexperienced Mario Gutierrez his first Derby ride aboard I’ll Have Another and his second four years later with Nyquist.

They won the roses both times.

This situation is different in that Gutierrez was the regular rider back then for a lot of horses trained by O’Neill and owned by J. Paul Reddam at their home base in Southern California. These days, Emisael Jaramillo tends to get first call for O’Neill’s mounts.

But Pavlovian was a special case. After his first eight races, he was nowhere close to the Kentucky Derby mix with just one win and all kinds of trouble getting out of the gate cleanly. At the Cal Cup Derby in mid-January, Pavlovian hopped in the air with his first step, slightly veered to his left, bumped with another horse and was shuffled back to last before closing to a solid third.

A tactical change was needed — as well as a new rider.

When O’Neill brought the horse to New Mexico for the Sunland Derby in mid-Feburary, he said Maldonado was the “fourth or fifth” rider down their list but was willing to sacrifice a mount in a stakes race at Santa Anita the same day to make it happen.

In that race, Pavlovian was throwing his head around a bit right before the gate opened but Maldonado managed to get him looking straight ahead and running from the first jump. Forwardly placed the entire way around, Pavlovian wore down Express Kid in the stretch and won by a nose, getting him on the path to Louisville.

“Credit to [Maldonado] for having faith in us that we weren’t putting him on a bum,” O’Neill said. “And it worked out great, him winning the way he did and Paul just being the most generous, loyal guy in the world immediately said, ‘Well, we’ve got a new rider for Pavlovian.’ So that was really cool.”

And Maldonado, who was born in Ohio but grew up in Puerto Rico, is grateful for the opportunity. While he has just shy of 1,700 wins to his credit, he has made his living largely in races far less glamorous. With just 20 graded stakes wins and only two Grade 1s on his résumé, it’s not easy to get rides in the biggest races.

“Just being here is a winner,” Maldonado said. “It really hasn’t hit me yet. We’ll see when the time comes. I tend to focus [under] pressure. I’m hard on myself. I love the game. I’m very competitive so it’s just a dream come true for me to be here. I have to slow down my excitement.”

Lack of Derby experience, however, doesn’t mean disaster. In 2022, Sonny Leon gave Rich Strike a picture-perfect ride to the winner’s circle in his one and only Derby mount. Stewart Elliott, a journeyman at smaller tracks in the mid-Atlantic, got the ride on Smarty Jones as a 2-year-old at Philadelphia Park and never looked back.

“It takes for you to believe in yourself,” Maldonado said. “Nobody’s going to believe for you. Mental toughness. It’s not easy. It’s a mental game, physical as well, but I think it’s more mental.”

That’s why Maldonado has spent a lot of time in his career reading, he said. Among the books he mentioned was “The Secret,” by Rhonda Byrne, a book that claims much of what happens to us is driven by our thoughts. While controversial and less than scientific, it’s the kind of thing Maldonado needed as he struggled with weight earlier in his career.

Though no fault of his own — he simply grew beyond the ideal jockey height of 5-foot-3 or 5-foot-4, making it hard to keep his weight down — it was a big challenge he had to overcome in an unforgiving sport where a pound or two on the back of a horse makes a huge difference.

“I eat fruits and vegetables,” he said. “Beyond eating, I take herbs, I take minerals. I cleanse my gut. After you do that once every six months, you’re good. It’s not [glamorous], but if you want to maintain a healthy lifestyle without doing it the wrong way or the bad way, that’s what you have to do. In a way, I’m glad I got the opportunity now after 25 years that I’m a little more seasoned in this sport. But it all goes together, the food you eat and your brain. Your gut is your second brain.”

Maldonado’s height hasn’t hurt his prospects on Pavlovian, who looks like a live longshot (30-1 current odds) after backing up the Sunland Derby win with a near wire-to-wire win in the Louisiana Derby when he just got beat at the wire by Emerging Market. Though many handicappers will dismiss Pavlovian based on his first eight races, he performed like a different horse once Maldonado got on his back.

“He’s so athletic and he’s so light, he’s like a lizard on a log,” O’Neill said. “He’s just so good and has a great ability to stay off the horse’s mouth leaving there and let them find themselves in good position. At the end of the day 99% of this is all about the horse and they make trainers look smart, owners look smart and jockeys look brilliant. I think Edwin is humble enough and smart enough to realize that. Though his abilities have definitely changed the tactics and we’re seeing newfound speed we didn’t see before, it’s really the horse is evolving and he’s getting better and better and he’s coming into the race in a great space.”

Though a true speed duel in the Kentucky Derby would compromise the chances of anyone close to the lead, Maldonado is likely to get Pavlovian out of the gate quickly and have him forwardly placed coming out of the No. 16 post. If he can get that done and put him in a clear position at a good cruising speed, it’ll simply come down to whether the horse is good enough.

“I think there’s no strategy,” Maldonado said. “I think you have to be there in the first flight. It’s not a secret. It’s 20 horses. It’s gonna go fast. But he did it already. The Louisiana Derby was a big race for him. He went through the fire and proved he can hang with them.”

Dylan Mingo, the No. 8 recruit in 2026 class, commits to Baylor

On April 6, North Carolina announced the hiring of former Denver Nuggets coach Michael Malone as the program's next head coach. A week later the Tar Heels lost a commitment from their highest-rated 2026 prospect in Long Island Lutheran five-star combo guard Dylan Mingo.

USA TODAY Sports

After two weeks, Mingo has found his new home.

Mingo will head from New York down to Waco after committing to Scott Drew and the Baylor Bears. It will also give him an opportunity to team up with his older brother Kayden who transferred to Baylor from Penn State.

Kayden averaged 13.7 points and 4.3 assists with the Nittany Lions.

According to 247Sports, the 6-foot-5, 190-pounder ranks as the No. 8 player in the 2026 class, the No. 3 combo guard, and the top player out of New York.

An injury kept him out for most of his senior year, but he excelled last summer while playing for the PSA Cardinals on the Nike EYBL Circuit. That summer, he averaged 19.3 points, 7.8 rebounds, 2.6 assists, and 2.3 steals, and was named MVP of the NBPA Top-100 Camp.

Dylan is just the second pledge in Baylor's 2026 high school recruiting class. He joins four-star small forward signee Elijah Williams.

For Scott Drew, it's another massive recruiting win as Mingo is the Bears' highest-rated pledge since VJ Edgecombe in 2024 and makes it six straight recruiting cycles with a five-star pledge.

Full-strength PSG raring to go against Bayern in Champions League semifinal

PARIS (AP) — Paris Saint-Germain coach Luis Enrique joked that picking his team against Bayern Munich will be like a “lottery” because he finally has a full-strength squad to choose from.

France League One Soccer

That means midfielder Vitinha could start against the six-time champion in the first leg of their Champions League semifinal in Paris on Wednesday. He missed the last two Ligue 1 games with a right heel injury sustained during a2-1 loss to Lyon.

“It'll be a lottery. Everyone’s ready,” Luis Enrique said Tuesday at a pregame news conference. “But be warned, we'll need all the players who are apt to play, and on that point I think we’re more than ready.”

With so many players pushing for places, rather thanrecovering from injurylike earlier in the season, Luis Enrique was faced with a new task.

“It’s all about calming everyone down,” he said.

Midfield battle

Vitinha's presence alongside João Neves and the returning Fabián Ruiz is crucial in a contest pitting arguably the two best midfields in the competition.

Bayern boasts physicality, tactical assuredness and slick passing with Joshua Kimmich, Aleksandar Pavlovic and Leon Goretzka, allied to the goals and assists of right wing Michael Olise and the prolific scoring of burly striker Harry Kane. On the left wing is Luis Díaz, who scored both goals when Bayern won 2-1 in Paris in the league stage in November.

Holding midfield is key to stopping Bayern dictating the game like it did in the quarterfinalsagainst Real Madrid, and against PSG last time they met.

Vitinha has been in sterling form and is on course for his best season in terms of goals, with seven so far, having scored nine for PSG two seasons ago. He was third in the men's Ballon d'Or vote last year.

Defense is the key

PSG is appearing in its third straight semifinal and faces a Bayern side which has not lost in any competition since Jan. 24 and scored 19 goals in the past five games.

“With two teams who attack so well the key will be defense,” Luis Enrique said. “Defensive statistics also matter, and these are the two best teams in Europe in that respect as well. In terms of consistency, Bayern are slightly ahead of us.”

PSG was sloppy at the back against Bayern in November, and a frustratedLuis Enrique criticized his playersafter that game.

But when PSG failed to qualify in the top eight teams and directly reach the last 16, Luis Enrique boldly predicted his team would come good later in the competition.

In an upbeat mood, he reminded journalists of that.

“There is no team better than us,” he said. “When we didn’t qualify in the top eight teams in the group stage I said I couldn’t see a team better than us.” ___

Raptors 'expect the unexpected' from Cavaliers in Game 4

The Toronto Raptors understand they must be ready for anything Sunday afternoon when they attempt to even their Eastern Conference first-round series with the visiting Cleveland Cavaliers.

Field Level Media

The Cavaliers hold a 2-1 lead in the best-of-seven series after the Raptors' 126-104 home victory in Game 3 on Thursday.

"Every game in this series so far, it was different," Toronto coach Darko Rajakovic said. "So every game we've got to expect the unexpected. We've got to be ready for it. We've got to have some counters and some ideas how we want to react in those moments. And most importantly, we've got to stay together throughout the whole 48 minutes."

The Raptors ran away from the Cavaliers with a 43-23 margin in the fourth quarter. The surge was ignited by reserve Jamison Battle, who scored all 14 of his points in the fourth quarter by going 5-for-5 from the floor -- including 4-for-4 from 3-point range.

The Cavaliers sat through this movie before. Battle sank all seven of his shots from the floor -- including six from 3-point range -- during his 20-point performance in Toronto's 112-101 victory on Oct. 31 at Cleveland.

"This is not the first time to see Jamison Battle perform this way," Rajakovic said. "Ultimate professional, always keeping himself ready, puts an enormous amount of work in every single day."

"He's a shooter," said Cleveland's Donovan Mitchell, who was held to 15 points Thursday after scoring 62 in the first two games.

"He gets open, and once you see one go in, it goes from there, right? So credit to him, credit to them. But, you know, we've got to be better, and we'll fix it."

While Mitchell and James Harden (18 points) encountered some trouble, the Raptors received 33 points each from Scottie Barnes and RJ Barrett, both career playoff bests. Reserve Collin Murray-Boyles added 22 points, which set the team's postseason record for a rookie.

Jamal Shead had five of Toronto's 11 steals that contributed to Cleveland's 22 turnovers leading to 23 points.

Harden committed eight turnovers in Game 3.

"For me, I've got to be better," Harden said. "I think all of us. Just turning the basketball over, giving them just easy points off transition opportunities. The first two games we did a good job. Give them credit, like they had a different game plan and were causing turnovers."

"We didn't do the dirty work that's necessary to win on the road," said Cavaliers coach Kenny Atkinson.

The Raptors played with more energy in Game 3, yet the Cavaliers trailed by only two points entering the fourth quarter.

"The force was just way on their side, their ability to kind of be the more aggressive team," Atkinson said. "Just kind of that simple.

"We'll clean up the tactical things in terms of doing the dirty work, stuff we talked about.

"You know, the defense has got to be better, you know, in the fourth quarter, we started missing coverages, got backdoored, lost our focus. ...we could not get a stop, then Battle came in and really gave them a boost. So this is the playoffs. This is what it's like."

The Raptors said on Friday that Immanuel Quickley has been ruled out for the rest of the series. Toronto's starting point guard missed the first three games of the series, and the team said he re-injured his right hamstring during his rehabilitation.

“This is the ulafala, and it represents the high chief or the high monarch,” Mauigoa said. “And it's part of our culture and obviously my dad is a chief. So in the back it's a little painting that kind of oversees the whole idea of the American Samoan community.”

Ace Zack Wheeler set to return to struggling Phillies rotation on Saturday at Atlanta

CHICAGO (AP) — Philadelphia ace right-hander Zack Wheeler, out since last August because of a blood clot found near his right shoulder and thoracic outlet surgery, will return to the struggling Phillies rotation on Saturday in Atlanta, manager Rob Thomson said Tuesday.

Associated Press

A three-time All-Star, the 35-year-old Wheeler last pitched on Aug. 15, 2025, at Washington, exiting after five innings.

Wheeler finished his sixth season with the Phillies at 10-5 with a 2.71 ERA through 149 2/3 innings and 24 starts. He's 113-75 with a 3.28 ERA for his career over 11 seasons with Philadelphia and the New York Mets.

Wheeler completed a five-game minor league rehab stint on Sunday when he threw 77 pitches for Double-A Reading. The righty also pitched for Triple-A Lehigh Valley during the assignment.

Thomson didn't think Wheeler, who rejoined the Phillies in Chicago, would face significant restrictions against the Braves.

“I see him as kind of a six (inning), 90 (pitch) guy,” Thomson said before the Phillies faced the Cubs. “I think he's basically at the end of spring training.”

Wheeler's return could provide a much-needed boost to the Phillies, who entered Tuesday on a six-game slide that dropped them to 8-14.

“I think having Zack Wheeler on your 26-man roster makes you a better roster no matter what,” Thomson said. “So when he's healthy and pitching, well he's one of, if not the best pitcher in the National League.”

Scott Wedgewood, top-seeded Avalanche stave off Kings in Game 1

Scott Wedgewood made 24 saves in his first Stanley Cup playoffs start and the Colorado Avalanche defeated the Los Angeles Kings 2-1 in Game 1 of their best-of-seven first-round series Sunday in Denver.

Field Level Media

Artturi Lehkonen and Logan O'Connor scored for the Avalanche, who had the league's best record to earn the Western Conference's top seed.

"Felt like we played a consistent game tonight, nothing special," said Avalanche defenseman Cale Makar. "We stuck to our game."

Artemi Panarin got the goal for the Kings, who claimed the eighth seed with the fewest points of all 16 playoff teams. Anton Forsberg, who also started his first playoff contest, stopped 28 shots.

Panarin spoiled Wedgewood's bid for a shutout with a 6-on-4 power-play goal with 2:22 left. Panarin scored on a screened shot from the high slot.

"We have some more to give offensively in their zone, especially holding on to pucks, making it harder on them to come 200 feet," said veteran Kings center Scott Laughton. "We did a good job defensively. And again, 31 (Forsberg) was really good for us."

Lehkonen gave Colorado a 1-0 lead with 4:31 left in the second period when he put in the rebound of his own tip attempt.

O'Connor made it 2-0 5:50 into the third period. He picked up a loose puck at the top of the right circle, skated in and beat Forsberg high on the short side.

An apparent goal by O'Connor 6:46 into the middle period was waved off immediately as Jack Drury was whistled for goaltender interference. Drury went into Forsberg after colliding with defenseman Drew Doughty. Colorado coach Jared Bednar challenged as he claimed Doughty was responsible for the contact, but the call was upheld.

Kings defenseman Brian Dumoulin was helped off the ice a little more than six minutes into the second after blocking an O'Connor shot.

Wedgewood stopped Trevor Moore, who charged in from the blue line, on a semi-breakaway with three minutes left in the first and Doughty sent a backhand wide with an open net seconds later.

The Avalanche fired the first four shots. The Kings' first came 6:40 into the game by Adrian Kempe from the right circle off the rush.

Colorado did not have a shot during a power play in the middle of the period.

Celtics storm to early lead, roll past 76ers in series opener

Jaylen Brown scored a game-high 26 points and Jayson Tatum added 25 points, 11 rebounds and seven assists to lead the Boston Celtics to a 123-91 victory over the visiting Philadelphia 76ers on Sunday in Game 1 of an Eastern Conference first-round playoff series.

Field Level Media

Sam Hauser made 4 of 6 attempts from 3-point range and added 12 points for second-seeded Boston, which never trailed in the game.

"One, we have to have an understanding of, I thought we got off to a good start in the series," Celtics head coach Joe Mazzulla said. "And two, it really doesn't matter anymore because in 48 hours we have to do it again, and we have to expect a better version of both our opponent and ourselves."

"The strength of our team is we have a bunch of different ways we can play. Everybody has to be ready. ... We had some guys make big plays throughout."

Seventh-seeded Philadelphia received 21 points with eight assists from Tyrese Maxey and 17 from Paul George. VJ Edgecombe scored 13 and Kelly Oubre Jr. finished with 10 points and seven rebounds.

The 76ers shot 38.9% from the floor, including 4 of 23 (17.4%) from 3-point territory. No Philadelphia player made more than one 3-pointer.

"It was one of those games where I thought we did a pretty good job of shot creation, you just can't live with not making them," said Sixers head coach Nick Nurse. "I thought we shied away from taking some 3-pointers.

Philadelphia also committed 15 turnovers, which helped Boston hold a 22-3 edge in points off turnovers.

"A lot went wrong, that's for sure," Nurse said. "It kind of started right from the beginning. The first quarter was moving past us pretty quick, and we just didn't do enough on either end to settle into the game. We didn't execute very well at the defensive end and put ourselves in a hole."

Boston center Neemias Queta was in foul trouble for much of the game but scored 13 points in 15 minutes of playing time.

Boston had an early double-digit lead after a Tatum jumper ended an 11-1 spurt that put the Celtics up 17-7. Philadelphia was 6 of 21 (28.6%) from the field -- 1 of 9 from 3-point range -- in the opening quarter and trailed 33-18 after the opening 12 minutes.

"I thought our fans were great, helped us get off to a good start," said Mazzulla. "Playoff basketball obviously means more and it's different in Boston, which we appreciate."

The Celtics stretched their lead to 23 points in the second quarter and held a 64-46 halftime lead. Tatum scored 21 of his 25 points in the opening half.

"Defensively, I thought (Tatum) was really good," said Mazzulla of the six-time All-Star. "Rebounding was great. Offensively, just gave the game what it needs."

After the 76ers trimmed their deficit to 15 midway through the third, Boston went on a 10-0 to extend its lead 83-58. The Celtics led by as many as 26 later in the quarter and had a 95-71 advantage entering the fourth. Brown scored 16 of his 26 points in the third.

The Celtics held a 107-75 lead following a Payton Pritchard layup with 9:03 to play. Boston led by as many as 35 later in the fourth.

Game 2 in the series will be Tuesday night in Boston.

"They need to let this one go," Nurse said of the Sixers.

TheTitans announced his death, citing an illness that first hospitalized him in early March. The team did not provide further details of his death.

“My heart aches with the loss of Coach Mac, who was so much more than a coach and broadcaster — he was family,” Titans owner Amy Strunk said, via a statement. “Coach Mac gave so much of himself to this organization over the years, and his passion, loyalty and love for the Titans never wavered.”

McGinnis, known in NFL circles as “Coach Mac,” spent three decades in the NFL as an assistant or head coach for four different teams starting in 1986. He started his NFL coaching career as the linebackers coach in Chicago, where he coached Hall of Fame linebacker Mike Singletary.

"I found him to be a friend over the years, and what a great time, the timing of him coming to the Bears and being my coach," Singletary said of McGinnis, per the Titans. "I needed somebody like him.

After 10 seasons with the Bears, McGinnis joined the Cardinals as defensive coordinator in 1996. McGinnis eventually served three-plus seasons as Arizona’s head coach from 2000-03, coaching players such as Pat Tilman and Anquan Boldin.

Dave McGinnis spent three decades coaching in the NFL and was beloved and respected across his stops.

The Cardinals fired McGinnis after a 17-40 stint, and he joined the Titans for the next eight seasons as a linebackers and assistant head coach on Jeff Fisher’s staff.

"The lives he touched, and the number of people that cared about him, it's amazing really," Fisher said of McGinnis, per the Titans. "Mac treated people so well, and made everyone feel like they were important.

“Even in the hospital, people would stop by to see him, and he would ask about their families, their grandkids, even when he could barely speak. He made a big impact on so many people. Everyone loved Mac."

McGinnis followed Fisher to the St. Louis Rams and finished his coaching career with the franchise from 2012-16. The Cardinals and Rams posted tributes to McGinnis upon the news of his death.

Shortly after he was done coaching, McGinnis returned to Nashville to join Titans Radio, where he work as the team’s color analyst on gameday broadcasts. He took the job with no broadcasting experience in 2017 and held it, calling Titans games through the 2025 season.

McGinnis spent three years as a defensive back at TCU. He then coached at TCU, Missouri, Indiana State and Kansas State before joining the NFL with the Bears in 1986.
