Bazball revolution falters for England in the Ashes, but it's not the end of the system

The architects of theBazballrevolution that England aimed to use to summit test cricket have conceded the preparation wasn't quite right for the Ashes. That's not to say the strategy will be shelved.

After arriving on Australian shores with great expectations, coach Brendon McCullum and captain Ben Stokes were intent on imposing the attack-at-all-costs strategy on the contest for the oldest trophy in cricket.

After just one warmup game — an internal trial against the second-string England lineup — it quickly backfired.

Relying on a pragmatic, conventional approach to the game and long experience of the conditions,Australia retained the Ashes on Sundaywith two matches remaining.

"Retrospectively, we lost 3-0 so you would probably say there was room for change there," McCullum told British broadcaster TNT Sport in terms of the preparations. "You put your hand up as a coach and say you might not have got that right."

After England lost the first two tests by eight wickets, McCullum decided the squad had overdone it in training between the outings inPerthandBrisbaneand decided to give the players a break atNoosa, one of Australia's premier beach resort villages.

The rest and relaxation did improve one statistic — in Adelaide England made it to Day 5 of a test for the first time on tour.

McCullum had been building for the Ashes series for years but hasn't yet been able to break thelong droughtin Australia extending back to 2011.

"We came here with high hopes, high ambitions and lofty goals," he said. "And we've been outplayed across three test matches."

The Bazball strategy was suspended late in Brisbane when Stokes played a conservative hand in trying to save the day-night test. In the last two days in Adelaide, with some glaring expectations, the batters at least tried to grit it out at the crease rather than hit the ball out of the ground every over.

"The last two days have been our best cricket, and that's because we've just played," McCullum said. "The previous nine days, we were so caught up and so driven to achieve something and succeed that we've almost got in our own way and we've stymied our talent and our skill and our ability."

McCullum said there were lessons to be taken from the differences in the contest in the third test.

"There's a lesson not just for the players. There's a lesson for the coach and the coaching staff," he said. "Preparation, that'll be something that's questioned.

"But we do have a great opportunity in the next two tests. We need to find something out of this tour. We need to play for pride."

England's bowling attack hasn't so far got its line and length right consistently on the hard, bouncy Australian wickets. Top-order batters have given away their wickets with poor shot selection — often attacking when conditions called for defense. There were too many catches put down, whereas Australia's catching has at times been exceptional.

Persisting with it

Under Stokes and McCullum, whose nickname is "Baz," England played an entertaining brand of cricket that earned the label "Bazball" that turned around the fortunes of England's test team. But it has divided critics.

McCullum said some players had gone off script in the heat of the moment.

"I did think we were rock hard in our belief of the style we were going to play when we came down here, knowing that we were going to be challenged," he said, "but I do think we got a little bit stuck."

Stokes said there'd be no "restricting people's mindset" in terms of how they believe they can succeed for the team.

"You never want to take away their ability to go out and score their runs in the way they feel is best going to suit them," the England skipper said. "But then, marrying the skills and the ability that they have with the mentality that it takes to be successful as an international sportsman.

"You put those two together and I know that we've got a very, very exciting test team."

Down 17 in 2nd half, No. 19 Texas Tech stuns No. 3 Duke

Nobody would have blamed Texas Tech for taking a wave-the-white-flag approach Saturday night in a showdown against Duke on one of the biggest stages in college basketball.

Three injured players, two others who fouled out early in the second half and Red Raider star J.T. Toppin straddled with foul trouble could have been used as excuses.

Instead, No. 19 Texas Tech didn't blink and rallied to stun the No. 3 Blue Devils 82-81 at Madison Square Garden in New York.

Christian Anderson hit the first of two free throws with 3.4 seconds left to complete an unlikely rally that erased a 17-point second-half deficit and handed Duke its first loss of the season.

Anderson scored 23 of his 27 points in the second half and Toppin weathered his foul woes to score 19, including key baskets during Texas Tech's late burst. The Red Raiders shot 55.2% from the field, compared to 51.9% for the Blue Devils.

Cameron Boozer led the Blue Devils (11-1) with 23 points, eight rebounds and seven assists and his brother Cayden added 13 points. But Cameron Boozer was 3 of 7 from the free-throw line in the second half and Duke was 6 of 13 as a team from the stripe. The Blue Devils also missed 10 of 13 attempts from 3-point range after halftime.

Despite those struggles, Duke held a 63-55 advantage with 11 1/2 minutes left. LeJuan Watts (20 points) and Leon Horner had just fouled out for Texas Tech (9-3) and Toppin had been tagged with his fourth infraction minutes earlier.

The Red Raiders didn't wobble, though, rallying to jump in front 78-77 when Toppin hit a turnaround jumper with 1:35 left.

The lead grew to four before Boozer buried a 3 and the second of two free throws to even the score at 81-all with 18.3 seconds to go.

Anderson worked the clock down before Caleb Foster fouled him 35 feet away from the rim with 3.4 seconds on the clock. Anderson made the first foul shot but missed the second, then Duke's Isaiah Evans snatched a long defensive rebound and hastily called a timeout.

After a review to see how much time was left, three-tenths of a second was taken off, leaving the Blue Devils with 1.6.

Duke got the ball into Boozer's hands, but the talented freshman's 3-pointer from the left wing was off the mark to help preserve Texas Tech's first win against a ranked team since January 2024.

With Anderson leading the way, the Red Raiders turned the game around from outside the arc. After missing 10 of their first 11 attempts, they knocked down 6 of 11 to peck away and finally pass Duke.

Bears rally, beat Packers in OT; Jordan Love suffers concussion

Caleb Williams hit DJ Moore with a 46-yard touchdown pass in overtime as the Chicago Bears overcame a 10-point fourth-quarter deficit for a 22-16 victory over the visiting Green Bay Packers on Saturday night, securing their hold on first place in the NFC North.

Along with losing to their longtime rivals, the Packers lost quarterback Jordan Love to a concussion in the second quarter on a helmet-to-helmet hit by Austin Booker.

Chicago recovered an onside kick to set up the tying touchdown on a fourth-and-4 play, a 6-yard pass from Williams to free agent rookie Jahdae Walker to tie it at 16-all with 24 seconds remaining in regulation.

Green Bay drove to the Chicago 36 on the first series in overtime, but reserve quarterback Malik Willis fumbled the snap on fourth-and-1.

On the ensuing possession, Kyle Monangai carried for 11 yards on third-and-3 for a first down at the Packers 46. Williams then hit Moore with the game-winner.

Cairo Santos' third field goal of the game, a 43-yarder with 1:59 remaining, pulled Chicago within 16-9.

Romeo Doubs was unable to corral the onside kick and the Bears recovered for a first down at their own 47. Williams later hit a wide-open Walker in the right corner of the end zone.

Chicago (11-4) maintained first place in the division over Green Bay (9-5-1), which defeated the Bears 28-21 at home two weeks ago.

Willis, who came on when Love was injured on a second-quarter sack, directed three scoring drives, including a 33-yard touchdown pass to Doubs that put Green Bay in front 13-3 with 33 seconds left in the third quarter.

Santos answered on the Bears' next possession with a 51-yard field goal to make it 13-6. Brandon McManus countered with a 28-yard field goal to extend the lead to 10 with 5:03 left.

Williams completed 19 of 34 passes for 250 yards and two touchdowns. D'Andre Swift ran for 58 yards and Monangai added 50.

The Packers ran for 192 yards, including 82 by Emanuel Wilson. Willis completed 9 of 11 passes for 121 yards and also ran for 44 yards. Josh Jacobs was limited to 36 rushing yards on 12 carries. Before he exited, Love completed 8 of 13 passes for 77 yards.

After being blanked in the first half, the Bears got on the board on the opening possession of the third quarter, pulling within 6-3 on Santos' 46-yard field goal. Williams keyed the drive with a 34-yard pass to Monangai.

Green Bay responded with a drive to the Bears' 3-yard line, but Jacobs' fumble was recovered by Chicago.

Willis came on to replace Love with first down at the Green Bay 32. Willis continued the 16-play, 91-yard drive that ended with McManus' 22-yard field goal that put the Packers in front 6-0 at the half.

McManus' 26-yarder put Green Bay ahead 3-0 early in the second quarter.

Each team failed on fourth-and-1 inside the opposing side's 10-yard line on its opening possession.

Bills add 4-time Pro Bowl DE Matthew Judon to practice squad

The Buffalo Bills signed four-time Pro Bowl defensive end Matthew Judon to their practice squad on Saturday.

Judon was waived by the Miami Dolphins on Wednesday and visited the Bills on Friday.

Judon, 33, recorded 19 tackles and one pass defensed in 13 games (three starts) during his lone season with the Dolphins. He was credited with just nine total pressures this season by Pro Football Focus, which would rank in the bottom five of the 112 outside linebackers graded by the site.

A Pro Bowl selection in four consecutive seasons -- 2019-20 with Baltimore and 2021-22 with New England -- Judon has totaled 72 sacks, 429 tackles, nine forced fumbles and four fumble recoveries in 144 career games (100 starts) with the Ravens, Patriots, Atlanta Falcons and Dolphins.

Also Saturday, the Bills released defensive end Morgan Fox.

Fox, 31, was elevated from the practice squad for one game this season with Buffalo.

He has totaled 183 tackles and 27.5 sacks in 121 career games (34 starts) with the Los Angeles Rams, Carolina Panthers, Los Angeles Chargers and Bills.

Lane Kiffin attempts to extend olive branch between Ole Miss, LSU after Jeff Landry chirp

Lane Kiffinwill not be coachingOle Miss footballin theCollege Football Playoffon Saturday, Dec. 20, vs. Tulane, but that won't stop him from tweeting about his former team.

In a response to tweets by Mississippi Governor Tate Reeves and Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry about the Rebels' playoff inclusion against theGreen Wave, who are the first team to qualify for the CFP from the state of Louisiana, Kiffin offered an olive branch.

"It's not the hunger games, guys," Kiffin wrote in a tweet on his personal X account (formerly Twitter). "Let's both cheer for each other all year long except when we play each other."

Of course, the animosity between Mississippi and LSU was heightened with Kiffin's departure from the Rebels to the Tigers, despite Mississippi going 11-1 in the regular season and earning a playoff berth. Kiffin wanted to continue coaching the Rebels in the playoffs, despite accepting a job with a rival.

Mississippi is scheduled to host LSU at Vaught-Hemingway Stadium in Oxford, Mississippi, on Sept. 19, 2026. That will be a game circled on all Rebels' fans' calendars, as they are likely to give Kiffin a reception he won't forget. Do not expect them to get along with Kiffin, then.

Longtime Iowa State starting QB Rocco Becht to transfer

Iowa State quarterback Rocco Becht announced Saturday that he would be entering the transfer portal.

Becht has been a three-year starter for the Cyclones and will have one year of eligibility remaining. He was 205-of-339 passing for 2,584 yards and 16 TDs with nine interceptions over 12 games in 2025. Becht suffered a shoulder injury at the end of the season and would have missed a bowl game had the Cyclones played in one. Iowa State opted out of the postseason after coach Matt Campbell took the Penn State job.

Not long after Campbell left for Penn State, Iowa State hired Washington State coach Jimmy Rogers.

"I've had meaningful conversations with coach Jimmy Rogers, and I'm confident he will elevate this program to new heights," Becht said. "But after deep consideration, I've decided to pursue new opportunities for my senior season. This decision was not taken lightly — it comes from a place of growth, purpose and belief in where my path is leading."

Forever A Cyclone❤️🌪️🌪️❤️pic.twitter.com/chHf7fjh0j

— Rocco Becht (@RoccoBecht)December 20, 2025

Becht, the son of former NFL tight end Anthony Becht, played in 42 games across three seasons with the Cyclones. Over his career, he's 714-of-1,177 passing for 9,274 yards and 64 TDs with 27 touchdowns.

Iowa State was 8-4 in 2025 after making the Big 12 title game and going 11-3 in 2024. The Cyclones lost to Arizona State in the conference championship game to miss out on a shot at the College Football Playoff.

Becht, who redshirted in 2022, had surgery on his non-throwing shoulder for what was reportedly a torn labrum. He dealt with the injury for much of the season and should be fully recovered for the 2026 season.

Could he end up at Penn State with Campbell? The Nittany Lions will need to replace Drew Allar after Allar's final season in State College ended prematurely with a leg injury in 2025. Becht's announcement came a day after TCU QB Josh Hoover said he would be entering the transfer portal. There are already multiple experienced quarterbacks who have said they will transfer, including Cincinnati's Brendan Sorsby,Nebraska's Dylan Raiola andMissouri's Beau Pribula.
