Lauren Coughlin, Nasa Hataoka, Miyu Yamashita tied for Aramco lead

Lauren Coughlin and Japan's Nasa Hataoka and Miyu Yamashita formed a three-way tie atop the leaderboard after one round of the inaugural Aramco Championship on Thursday in Las Vegas.

Field Level Media

The leaders posted rounds of 5-under-par 67 at Shadow Creek Golf Course. Three more are on their tails at 4-under 68: World No. 2 Nelly Korda, Jing Yan and South Korea's Hyo Joo Kim, who has won two straight LPGA Tour events entering the week.

The Aramco Championship, co-sanctioned by the LPGA and Ladies European Tour, features a purse of $4 million and replaces the T-Mobile Match Play on the schedule.

Coughlin, 33, is trying to get back in contention for an LPGA victory after winning her first two titles in 2024 and being shut out in 2025.

She could have been the outright first-round leader after collecting six birdies through 17 holes, but she made her only misstep of the day with a bogey at her final hole, the par-4 ninth.

"I feel like I know this place really well," said Coughlin, who lost in the final of the Match Play last year. "Been in a lot of the places (on the course) that you don't want to be, so I feel like I've been able to ... I just know the spots that I need to land it to a lot of the pins, where to miss if you have to."

Hataoka's round was the inverse of Coughlin's. She bogeyed the first hole, immediately bounced back at the second and went on to total six birdies.

"Before tournament get (started) we talk about my goal is 5-under total for four days," Hataoka said. "It was (not a) windier condition. That's why I made so many good birdies today."

Yamashita stood at 1 over through her first eight holes but turned it around thanks to an eagle 3 at the 18th hole and four birdies on her second nine, the front side.

"The course is tough, but it's fun to figure it out," Yamashita said through a translator. "So there is always a chance of making bogey, but I want to play patience in golf."

Korda played her first round with her sister Jessica Korda, who recently returned to competition after giving birth to her first child.

"I'm super rusty obviously but I had such a fun time," said Jessica Korda, who posted 3-over 75. "Her and Charley (Hull) are just such great players. I've been on the commentating side and the spectating side, and being inside (the ropes) is so much fun."

Tiger Woods said he talked to Trump after wreck: 'I was just talking with the president'

In the minutes after his vehicle overturned on a narrow Jupiter Island, Florida, road, Tiger Woods said he was on the phone with President Donald Trump, according tonewly released body camera video.

Yahoo Sports

Woods' SUVcollided with a slower pickup truck's trailer on Fridayand overturned onto its driver's side. Woods himself climbed out of the vehicle through the passenger side, and spoke with arriving officers at the scene for some time afterward. The officers observed Woods acting in an impaired fashion and placed him under arrest.

At one point, Woods walked down a nearby lane and was called back to the scene. He could be heard saying "Thank you so much. All right. You got it. Bye," and later tells the officer, "I was just talking with the president."

It's not clear who called whom.

"I feel so badly He's got some difficulty. There was an accident, and that's all I know," Trump said shortly after Woods' incident. "A very close friend of mine, he's an amazing person, an amazing man. But some difficulty."

Woods told an officer at the scene that "he was very apologetic about what he did last night" — apparently a reference to Trump saying that Woods would not be playing in the Masters this year.

Trump and Woods have a long history, having played golf together for many years. Trump awarded Woods the Congressional Medal of Freedom in 2019. Woods is now dating Vanessa Trump, the ex-wife of Donald Trump Jr.

Woods was arrested on charges of DUI and refusing to submit to a lawful test, and was later released. He has pleaded not guilty to the charges, and his attorney has sought permission for Woods to leave the country for treatment.

Zemgus Girgensons scored his 100th career goal and Brayden Point scored his second in 14 games for Tampa Bay, which improved to 7-1-2 in the past 10 games. Jake Guentzel and Gage Goncalves both had two assists while Andrei Vasilevskiy finished with 21 saves.

Egor Chinakov scored twice and Rickard Rackell also scored for Pittsburgh. Sam Girard and Kris Letang both had two assists and Stuart Skinner finished with 27 saves.

The Penguins remain in second place in the Metropolitan Division, three points ahead of the New York Islanders.

Cirelli scored Tampa Bay's first two goals and he added an empty-netter for his first hat trick since Jan. 17, 2020.

Cirelli and Rakell traded goals 1:55 apart in the opening seven minutes of the game before Chinakov gave the Penguins their first lead of the game with a backhander from the right circle at 16:10.

Cirelli notched his second of the game 11 seconds into the second, deflecting a puck away from Bryan Rust and racing up ice for a breakaway, lifting a backhand shot over Skinner for a shorthanded marker.

Point put the Lightning back in front at 14:08 on a rebound. Girgensons took a pass from Gourde behind the net, pulled the puck to his forehand as he reached the crease and tucked a backhander into the open part of the net with 54.7 seconds left in the second.

Kucherov made it 5-2 at 13:50 of the third.

Taj Bradley tosses 6 shutout innings, Minnesota homers 3 times in the 9th in a 5-1 win over KC

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Taj Bradley pitched six innings of five-hit ball, Minnesota homered three times in the ninth inning to break open a close game, and the Twins beat the Kansas City Royals 5-1 on Thursday to avoid a three-game series sweep.

Bradley (1-0) struck out three and walked one while out-dueling Cole Ragans (0-2), helping the Twins improve to 2-0 with him on the mound. Minnesota was winless in its other four games on a season-opening six-game trip through Baltimore and Kansas City.

Kody Clemens scored on an error by five-time Gold Glove-winning catcher Salvador Perez in the second, and Byron Buxton added a sacrifice fly off John Schreiber in the eighth, before the Twins teed off against Royals reliever Steven Cruz in the ninth.

Matt Wallner began the barrage with his homer to left, Clemens followed two batters late with his first of the season, and Josh Bell gave the Twins their first back-to-back homers since last July with his shot off Cruz to right field.

The only offense for Kansas City came in the eighth, when Maikel Garcia and Bobby Witt Jr. put runners on the corners with back-to-back singles, and Vinnie Pasquantino hit a sacrifice fly. But after Perez grounded into a fielder's choice, Twins reliever Taylor Rogers struck out Jac Caglianone with a sweeper out of the zone to leave the tying run on second base.

The meager offense came one a day after the Royals piled up 13 runs in a win over the Twins.

Ragans bounced back nicely from a dismal opening day in Atlanta, when the 2024 All-Star surrendered three homers in a 6-0 loss to the Braves. The Royals' left-hander went six innings and allowed four hits and a walk while striking out eight.

LeBron James disparages Memphis, says he 'would've pulled an Eli Manning' if Grizzlies had drafted him

When the 2025-26 NBA season ends for the Los Angeles Lakers, two questions will follow LeBron James into the offseason.

Yahoo Sports

First, will he decide to play a 24th season or retire? Second, if he does play, will that be with the Lakers or another team? Could he return for a third turn with the Cleveland Cavaliers? Might he finally go to the New York Knicks?

Another question that probably wouldn't have been asked but can now be safely answered: If he does play, James will not suit up for the Memphis Grizzlies next season.

Appearing on the "Bob Does Sports" YouTube show, James said he "might have pulled an Eli Manning" if the Grizzlies had won the2003 NBA Draftlottery. (The Memphis remarks begin atthe 10:55 mark.)

The conversation about Memphis began when James was asked if the travel during an NBA season got to him. After disparaging staying at a Hyatt in Milwaukee at 41 years old, he followed up by saying, "You think I want to do that, being in Memphis on a random-ass Thursday?"

James then revealed that his feelings about the city are shared by several NBA players.

"We all like, 'You guys have to move,'" he continued. "Let's go over to Nashville. You got Vanderbilt over there. You got the f****ing NASCAR. You got a stadium. Don't they got a hockey team too?"

Host Robby Berger then said to the camera, "Doesn't look like LeBron's going to be on the Grizzlies any time soon."

James responded, "Yeah, they know. Their only chance was in 2003 if they would've won the lottery. And I might have pulled an Eli Manning and not shown up."

The Manning remark is a reference to the 2004 NFL Draft when the quarterback and his agent reportedly told the San Diego Chargers that he wouldn't play for them even if he was drafted No. 1 overall. The Chargers did select him, buttraded him to the New York Giantsfor Philip Rivers.

Serendipitously, the Cleveland Cavaliers won the No. 1 overall pick and the Akron, Ohio, native went to his home area team.

Memphis ended up with the No. 13 selection and drafted Marcus Banks out of UNLV, then traded him to the Boston Celtics. (The Grizzlies actually won the No. 2 pick, but had to trade it to the Detroit Pistons as a condition ofa 1997 tradethat sent Otis Thorpe to Memphis. The Pistons selected Darko Milicic.)

If James and his fellow NBA players get their wish for the Grizzlies to relocate to Nashville, it likely wouldn't happenuntil 2029when the team's lease with FedEx Forum expires. James will almost certainly be retired by then. And maybe the Grizzlies will be competitive after a rebuild started bytrading Desmond BaneandJaren Jackson Jr., with Ja Morantexpected to be next.

Bigger and better: Women's Final Four teams filled with multi-talented frontcourt players

PHOENIX (AP) — Madison Booker has a midrange jumper that's almost unblockable, beats defenders off the dribble, plays in the post when she wants, shoots the 3 if she needs to.

NCAA Texas Basketball

The Texas junior has great court vision, is an adept passer and is a menace defensively, bullying smaller guards on the ball, jumping into passing lanes off it.

Had it been an earlier era in women's college basketball, Booker would have been a back-to-the-basket player.

But this is a new age, one where 6-footers are everywhere atthis year's Final Fourand Booker is a guard — at 6-foot-1.

"You look at Madison Booker and, I mean, she's like a mini-KD (Kevin Durant)," Kentucky coach Kenny Brooks said after Booker had 17 points, eight rebounds and five assists against his team in the Sweet 16.

The average height for an American woman is 5-3, according to the CDC.

Women's college basketball has become the oversized outlier above the median, towering players spread across the Division I landscape, many of whom do more than just park under the basket.

This year's repeat Final Four has a large collection of large players, UConn, South Carolina, UCLA and Texas arriving with a combined 36 players 6-0 or taller — 55.6% of all the players in Phoenix.

UCLA's Lauren Betts is the tallest among the regular contributors at 6-7, anchoring a team with eight players at least 6-0.

The two-time AP All-American is a matchup nightmare, using her height and skill to score in a variety of ways — mainly shooting over smaller defenders. Betts is just as dominant on the defensive end, swatting shots, altering many more, deterring opponents from even thinking about going into the lane.

Betts averaged 18.5 points and 7.6 rebounds while shooting 60.1% from the field and leading the Bruins (35-1) with 71 blocked shots.

"It's just really hard to defend her an entire game," Duke coach Kara Lawson said after Betts scored 15 of her 23 points inUCLA's 70-58 comeback winover the Blue Devils in the Elite Eight.

Betts and the Bruins will face pair of Texas bigs in Friday's second Final Four game.

Kyla Oldacre is 6-6, Breya Cunningham 6-4 and the pair helped shut down Betts when the teams met in November in Las Vegas.

They've been doing it all season on a team that features nine players 6-0 or taller.

Behind the towering presence of Oldacre and Cunningham, Texas (35-3) was one of the nation's best defensive teams, holding teams to 55.9 points per game and 38% shooting from the field.

The two biggest Longhorns are a handful on offense as well, both shooting at least 59% from the floor while combining to score 18.3 points and grab 11.8 rebounds per game.

"You can win a lot of games with just good guard play, no question, but you've got to have size to go with it," Texas coach Vic Schaefer said.

The first Final Four game doesn't get any smaller.

Reigning national champion UConn (38-0) has two All-Americans in Azzi Fudd and Sarah Strong — alsoThe Associated Press player of the year— as they've gone nearly untested through an undefeated season.

Fudd is 5-11, but Strong is a 6-2 forward who fits the mold of today's bigs on a team with 10 players 6-0 or taller.

Strong is a superb post player, yet can also beat defenders off the dribble and shoots 41% from 3. Like Booker, she also has great court vision and is a great passer.

Strong averaged 18.8 points on 60% shooting, 7.7 rebounds and 3.8 assists on a front line that includes 6-4 Serah Williams with 6-5 Jana El-Alfy coming off the bench.

"She is such a hard guard," North Carolina coach Courtney Banghart said after Strong had 21 points and 10 rebounds and five steals against her team in the Sweet 16. "She's so unselfish. If she wants to score 40 the next game, she can."

South Carolina (35-3) got manhandled by UConn in last year's title game, but coach Dawn Staley retooled her roster to add versatility.

Second-team All-American Joyce Edwards played for Staley last season, but took a big jump this season, boosting her scoring average seven points to 19.7 per game. The 6-3 sophomore can play inside or out, has a strong midrange game and can guard multiple positions.

Madina Okot is 6-6, but is far more than a back-to-the-basket big.

The Kenyan center is an elite finisher at the rim, was the SEC's leading rebounder at 10.8 per game and shot 48% from 3 (58% overall). Her size and timing combined to make her a super interior defender, leading the team with 55 blocks while altering many more.

The pair anchor a team that has nine players 6-0 or taller and held its first four NCAA Tournament opponents to 32% shooting.

"They're a much better team than they were last year, really hard to prepare for," UConn coach Geno Auriemma said. "They've shot the ball exceptionally well this year. They've added the size that is hard to match up with."

Size can be found all across women's basketball these days, particularly at this year's Final Four.
