Lottery jackpot: Wizards land No. 1 overall pick in NBA Draft

The Washington Wizards traded for injured veterans Anthony Davis and Trae Young over the winter as part of a plan to turn around one of the league's worst teams.

Field Level Media

Another crucial piece of the Wizards' plan fell into place during Sunday's NBA draft lottery when they won the first pick in a year when the draft features multiple potential stars.

It marks the first time Washington owns the No. 1 overall pick since 2010 when it chose guard John Wall, who became a five-time All-Star. Wall flew to Chicago to represent the Wizards at the podium during the lottery presentation.

The Utah Jazz landed the second pick, the Memphis Grizzlies got No. 3 and the Chicago Bulls jumped up to No. 4.

The Wizards, Indiana Pacers and Brooklyn Nets each had 14% chances to win the lottery. The Jazz were at 11.5% and Memphis was at 9%. The Bulls had odds of just 4.5% but jumped five teams to reach the top four.

Overall, it will be the fifth time Washington has owned the No. 1 pick. The Wizards posted the league's worst showing this season (17-65), compiled a 50-196 record over the past three campaigns and have missed the playoffs five straight seasons.

"Today is another encouraging day for Wizards fans and our entire organization," team president Michael Winger said in a news release. "To choose first among this inspiring group of athletes is a welcomed opportunity, and challenge, for our group. We look forward to adding another high performing young player to our ascending team."

The NBA Draft will be held June 23-24 in New York.

The top candidates to go No. 1 overall are BYU guard AJ Dybantsa and Kansas guard Darryn Peterson, a pair of 19-year-olds who spent just one year in school.

The 6-foot-9 Dybantsa led the nation in scoring with 25.5 points per game and has the look of a player who will soon be among the top NBA scorers. The 6-6 Peterson was an injury-related enigma at Kansas, yet averaged 20.2 points and might have been the most gifted player in the college ranks.

Moments before the results were announced, Dybantsa was thinking about the options.

"Obviously, wanting to be the No. 1 pick, working to be the No. 1 pick, I'll be excited," Dybantsa said. "It's a great opportunity."

Among other top candidates are Duke forward Cameron Boozer, North Carolina forward Caleb Wilson, Arkansas guard Darius Acuff, Illinois guard Keaton Wagler and Louisville guard Mikel Brown Jr.

The Los Angeles Clippers landed the fifth pick, which came from the Indiana Pacers due to a trade deadline deal that moved Ivica Zubac to the Pacers and Bennedict Mathurin to the Clippers. The Pacers' pick was protected only if it finished among the top four.

The Brooklyn Nets will select sixth, following by the Sacramento Kings, Atlanta Hawks, Dallas Mavericks and Milwaukee Bucks to round out the top 10. Atlanta ended up with the No. 8 pick, stemming from a trade with the New Orleans Pelicans on the night of the 2025 draft that moved Derik Queen to New Orleans.

The Golden State Warriors have the 11th pick, followed by the Oklahoma City Thunder with a pick obtained from the Clippers in the 2019 trade that sent Paul George to Los Angeles. The Thunder also obtained reigning MVP Shai Gilgeous-Alexander in the deal.

The Miami Heat will pick 13th and the Charlotte Hornets claimed the last lottery selection.

Sky's second-half outburst spoils expansion Fire's debut

Kamilla Cardoso recorded 22 points and 14 rebounds and Skylar Diggins had 21 points, 11 rebounds and seven assists in her team debut as the Chicago Sky notched a 98-83 road victory on Saturday night to spoil the opener for the expansion Portland Fire.

Field Level Media

Rickea Jackson added 19 points and seven rebounds and Jacy Sheldon scored 13 points for the Sky, who revamped their roster after tying for the league low of 10 victories last season. The 35-year-old Diggins, signed as a free agent, made 8 of 12 shots, including two 3-pointers.

First-round draft pick Gabriela Jaquez and Elizabeth Williams added 10 points apiece for the Sky.

Carla Leite scored 18 points and Bridget Carlson and reserve Sarah Ashlee Barker added 13 points apiece for Portland. Megan Gustafson had 10 points off the bench.

Chicago shot 47.8% from the field and made 6 of 17 from 3-point range. The Sky held a 46-24 rebounding advantage.

The Fire made 40.8% of their attempts, including 9 of 29 from behind the arc. Portland collected just three offensive boards.

After a 17-point first-half lead got away, Chicago went on a 15-4 dash in the final quarter. Diggins capped it with a 3-pointer to give the Sky an 85-74 lead with 4:47 remaining.

Cardoso's layup gave the Sky a 92-76 lead with 2:09 left to essentially finish off the Fire.

Portland trailed by 13 at halftime before outscoring the Sky 30-18 in the third quarter.

The Fire got back quickly in the third quarter as Carleton drilled two treys to end an 11-0 run that cut Chicago's lead to 52-49.

Chicago later received five straight points from Jaquez to hold a 68-58 advantage with 2:41 remaining in the quarter.

But Portland scored the final nine points of the period, capped by Barker's basket, to move within 68-67 with 29.9 seconds left.

Carleton buried a trey to tie it at 70 with 8:39 left in the contest.

Diggins and Jackson scored 12 points apiece in the first half as Chicago led 50-37 at the break. Barker had 11 in the half for the Fire.

The Sky made just 6 of 18 shots in the first quarter and still led 19-18. But Chicago shot 75% (12 of 16) in the second quarter and took its biggest lead at 49-32 on two free throws by Jaquez with 59.7 seconds left in the half.

PWHL issues 1-game suspension and $250 fine against Frost's Curl-Salemme after playoff series opener

Frost forward Britta Curl-Salemme has been suspended by the PWHL for one game and fined $250 for two separate plays in Minnesota’s playoff semifinal series opener against Montreal, the league announced on Monday.

Associated Press

Curl-Salemme’s suspension stems from a game misconduct she received for an illegal check to the head on Kaitlin Willoughby in the final minute of the second period ofMinnesota’s 5-4 overtime win on Saturday. The league’s Player Safety Committee determined Curl-Salemme made no attempt to play the puck and raised her forearm to complete the check in deeming the hit to Willoughby’s head being avoidable.

The fine was the result of Curl-Salemme’s altercation with Montreal’s Abby Roque, in which both were penalized for roughing earlier in the second period. The committee determined supplemental discipline was warranted in noting the Frost forward grabbed and pulled Roque’s facial protector in sending the player “to the ice with a degree of violence.”

The Frost are two-time defending Walter Cup champions, and Curl-Salemme will miss Game 2 of the best-of-five series to be played at Montreal on Tuesday. The second-year player finished the regular season third in the league with 29 points, including a PWHL-leading 18 assists.

This is Curl-Salemme's first suspension of the season, though she was fined $250 for a cross-checking penalty in March. Last season, she was issued three separate one-game suspensions, twice for illegal checks to the head, and the other time for high-sticking.

Seiya Suzuki hit a 455-foot home run for the NL Central leaders, who improved to 23-12 with their 16th win in 19 games. Chicago has won 12 in a row at home, the team’s best streak at Wrigley Field since a 14-game run in 2008.

The Reds took a 4-3 lead in the eighth when Spencer Steer lined an RBI single against Ben Brown, only to drop their fourth straight.

Pete Crow-Armstrong tripled leading off the ninth against Emilio Pagán (2-1) on a ball that popped out of center fielder Dane Myers’ glove as he tried to make a leaping catch against the wall. Crow-Armstrong scored one out later on Nico Hoerner’s sacrifice fly.

Conforto, batting for Matt Shaw, then drove a 3-2 pitch to center and was mobbed by happy teammates as he crossed home plate.

The teams waited out a delay of 1 hour, 40 minutes at the start because of a thunderstorm after the game was initially moved up a half hour.

The Cubs trailed 3-0 in the fourth before Suzuki tied it with a three-run drive off Chase Petty, Chicago’s longest homer of the season.

Edward Cabrera went six innings, allowing three runs and nine hits. He gave up a homer to JJ Bleday leading off the third and a two-run drive to Ke’Bryan Hayes in the fourth.

Ryan Rolison (2-0) worked the ninth.

In his first major league start this season, Petty gave up three runs and four hits in 5 2/3 innings. The Reds recalled the right-hander from Triple-A Louisville prior to the game.

Cubs RHP Jameson Taillon (2-1, 4.41 ERA) looks to win his second straight start, while LHP Andrew Abbott (1-2, 5.97) gets the ball for the Reds. Taillon tossed seven solid innings at San Diego last week.

USA TODAY

Speaking on Sirius XM’s “Deals and Dunks” on Monday, NBA insider Marc Stein tabbed theCelticsas a team that could be in the running for the two-time MVP if the Bucks opt to move him after a disappointing 2025-26 season. “Because they’ve created this [cap] flexibility for themselves when it looked like it was gonna be really hard to do so — I feel like they’re gonna be able to make moves,” Stein said of the Celtics. “There will inevitably be people who bring back the, ‘Do they break up Tatum and [Jaylen] Brown’ — like, that storyline will probably come back.“There have been some rumblings at various points during the season that the Celtics could be a stealth Giannis team and a team that potentially interests Giannis. So let’s keep our eye on the Celtics. We know Brad Stevens is not afraid to make big moves and take big swings. So I think we have to be ready for just about anything with Boston.”
