Ghanaian Premier League player killed in suspected armed robbery attack on team bus

Dominic Frimpong of Ghanaian Premier League club Berekum Chelsea was killed after the team’s bus was attacked by a group of suspected armed robbers, the country’s soccer association said Monday.

NY Post Sports

The incident happened on Sunday as Berekum Chelsea was returning from its game against Samartex in Samreboi in southern Ghana, the club said in a statement.

“Masked men welding guns and assault rifles started shooting at our bus as the driver tried to reverse. The players and staff fled into near by bushes to take cover,” the statement read.

The Ghanaian Football Association later said 20-year-old winger Dominic Frimpong was reportedly killed in the incident.

“This tragic incident is not only a huge loss to Berekum Chelsea but also to Ghana football as a whole. Dominic was a promising young talent whose dedication and passion for the game embodied the spirit of our league,” the governing body said in a statement.

The GFA added it would strengthen security measures for clubs traveling for domestic competitions.

In 2023, another Ghanian Premier League team’s bus, Legon Cities, was attacked by suspected armed robbers, though no injuries were reported.

Heat left fuming over LaMelo Ball's trip that injured Bam Adebayo

LaMelo Ball wound up as the hero for the Charlotte Hornets in their play-in victory over the Heat on Tuesday, but Miami coach Erik Spoelstra believes Ball should have been ejected from the game in the first half.

Field Level Media

Ball tripped Heat star Bam Adebayo early in the second quarter, pulling on his left ankle, and Adebayo fell hard to the floor under the basket. Adebayo sustained a back injury that kept him out for the remainder of host Charlotte's 127-126 overtime victory.

With Adebayo still lying at the endline, play continued with baskets at both ends. Eventually the action was stopped with the Hornets ahead 30-26 with 10:58 left in the period. Adebayo was able to stand up and walk slowly to the locker room for evaluation.

Spoelstra said postgame, "I didn't see it (when it happened), but I don't think it's cute. I don't think it's funny. I think it's a stupid play. It's a dangerous play. Obviously, our best player was out.

"I'm not making an excuse. The Hornets played great and they made those plays down the stretch. We had our opportunities to win. That's a shame. You should be penalized for that. I don't think that belongs in the game -- tripping guys, shenanigans."

Referee Zach Zarba told a pool reporter postgame that the play could not have been reviewed because action continued after the incident.

Ball said of the play, "I apologize on that one. I got hit in the head (on the preceding action) and didn't really know where I was. But I'm going to check on him, see if he's OK and everything."

Ball wound up with 30 points, and he made a layup with 4.7 seconds left in OT for the game-winning points.

Adebayo had six points and three rebounds before exiting. The nine-year veteran averaged a double-double during the regular season, putting up 20.1 points and 10.0 rebounds per contest, the latter ranking eighth in the NBA.

WWE will honor Hulk Hogan at WrestleMania 42, son says

Wrestling icon Hulk Hogan will be honored at WrestleMania 42, his son Nick told USA TODAY Sports.

USA TODAY Sports

The 2026 edition of WWE’s biggest event of the year will be the first sinceHogan’s death in July 2025.

“WWE is just so incredible,” Nick Hogan said. “They're just such phenomenal people there, and they have so much love for my dad and my family, and they are doing some really special stuff this year to honor him and to honor his legacy.”

Nick Hogan didn’t specify how WWE will pay tribute to his dad, but it is confirmed the WWE Hall of Famer will be inducted once more, this time for an “immortal moment” — his match with Andre the Giant for the WWF World Heavyweight Championship at WrestleMania 3. The Hall of Fame class typically gets recognized during WrestleMania.

USA TODAY Sports reached out to WWE for more information.

Hulk Hogan died at the age of 71after suffering cardiac arrest.WWE honored him immediately after his deathwith a 10-bell salute, tribute videos and words from current stars on the major impact he had on wrestling.

His final appearance with the company came six months before his death, in January 2025 inthe Netflix debut of Monday Night Raw. However, it was an infamous appearance; he was heavily booed by the crowd as he appeared and spoke.

Despitethe controversy that surrounded Hogan− especially in the later years of his life, whichhurt his legacy− he was monumental in the building of WrestleMania, an event that catapulted wrestling to the mainstream and put WWE at the forefront of the industry. He headlined the first one in 1985 with a tag team match with Mr. T against Paul Orndorff and Roddy Piper, which featured Muhammad Ali as a special guest referee.

Hogan was in the main event of the first three WrestleManias, and eight of the first nine editions. He finished his career with 12 total matches in the event.

“Seeing how much he loved being there, and the perspective he had on building that with Vince (McMahon) from the ground up, and seeing what it's turned into today, and being able to experience that by his side was something really special,” Nick Hogan said.

Nick Hogan said he will be in Las Vegas for WrestleMania in his dad’s honor, as he mentioned his dad made an effort every year to attend the show. He added he “can't wait for everyone to see what the WWE has planned.”

“As my dad would say, Hulkamania will live forever,” he said. “I firmly believe that the experience people are going to have this year at WrestleMania is going to feel like he is there in person, and I know he'll be there in spirit.”

Jury still out on effects Noah Dobson trade had on Islanders

Trading Noah Dobson Montreal last summermay have been the only choice Mathieu Darche had, and it may turn into a long-term win-win for both teams. One year in, with Victor Eklund and Kashawn Aitcheson yet to make their NHL debuts — though hopefully the Islanders call up Eklund Tuesday to make Game 82 interesting — it’s too early to judge.

NY Post Sports An image collage containing 1 images, Image 1 shows Montreal Canadiens defenseman Noah Dobson (53) skates during the Columbus Blue Jackets versus the Montreal Canadiens game on April 11, 2026, at Bell Centre in Montreal, QC

What was strange though, and what remains strange, was seeing much of the reaction toward Dobson from Islanders fans, which so often boiled down to “Good riddance.” Had Dobson — who suffered an upper-body injury on Saturday and will be reevaluated in two weeks, taking him out of at least some of the Habs’ first-round series — made his return to Long Island on Sunday as scheduled for theIslanders’ 4-11 playoff-eliminating loss, it seemed a distinct possibility that he would face boos.

Maybe, and hopefully, that is a misread based on the more online parts of the fan base. When Dobson makes his return to UBS with the Canadiens next season, he ought to be cheered. The 26-year-old was an excellent Islander, always represented the franchise well and has predictably proven hard to replace. One of Lou Lamoriello’s bigger missteps was failing to extend Dobson and treat him like a franchise cornerstone two summers ago. That much is obvious.

It’s hard to say the Islanders would be in playoff position with Dobson now, mainly because you can’t predict the cascading effects of adding his $9.5 million to the cap on the Islanders’ summer. But what you can say with certainty is that the Islanders very badly missed him this season.

That’s nothing against the trade, which was made with the long-term in mind, or Emil Heineman, who played well above expectation in scoring 22 goals and looks like a long-term piece of the puzzle for the Isles. It’s an acknowledgement of something obvious: that a right-handed, puck-moving defenseman who plays over 20 minutes a night is a rare commodity in the NHL, and the Islanders’ blue line lacked depth all season.

There is an idea out there that having Matthew Schaefer allowed the Islanders to trade Dobson without losing anything. Schaefer, though, is left-handed, and no one expected — let alone knew — that he would be so impactful when the deal was made on draft night.

The Islanders managed to patch the hole on their right side with Tony DeAngelo this season, and would be well-served bringing back No. 77 this summer. It’s no coincidence that much of their collapse happened when DeAngelo was out of the lineup injured; being without a puck-moving righty at a crucial point of the season proved near-impossible to overcome.

Short term, that was about as good a solution as you could expect. Combined with Heineman’s season, and the encouraging developments of Eklund and Aitcheson, and the long term outlook of the deal seems, tentatively, solid.

Still, it is a complicated deal to judge, and a lot needs to go right for the Islanders to feel good about it in five years.

Dobson picked up in Montreal where he left off on Long Island, lugging 22:29 per night with 47 points. He is a frustrating player in that his mistakes seem to always be highlight-worthy in the wrong way. He’s also more than good enough to make that tradeoff worth it.

His injury, and the prospect of being without him in the playoffs, amounts to a major problem for the Canadiens, who usually deploy Dobson and Mike Matheson against the opposition’s top line.

If Eklund becomes a piece of the Islanders’ top-six and Aitcheson a piece of the top-four, on top of Heineman being an annual 20-goal scorer, then of course the Islanders would feel great about it. That is also something like a best-case scenario.

Prospects, even good ones, are unknown commodities. The Islanders have made strides in how they’ve invested in Bridgeport and in player development this season. Still, they are not going to have a 100 percent hit rate. They also could use more consistency from Heineman, which they will hope comes in time for a player still early in his career.

You can safely say now that Darche turned a hard situation into something promising. That was about as much as he could have done upon realizing that Dobson would not be an Islander this season. It was a smart piece of work by a rookie general manager in a situation that could have ended much worse.

Whether the Islanders won the deal, though, is a different question altogether. One season isn’t enough time to answer it.

Tyson Fury faces bear-wrestling Arslanbek Makhmudov in his latest comeback to heavyweight boxing

LONDON (AP) — Tyson Fury’s latest comeback has revived the prospect of a long-awaited showdown with Anthony Joshua.

Associated Press

First, though, the self-described “Gypsy King” needs to deal with a Russian-born heavyweight who wrestled a bear for fun. Arslanbek Makhmudov is Fury’s opponent in their 12-round fight Saturday at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Fury, the former two-time heavyweight champion, came out of retirementfor the fifth time because he wants to “punch men in the face and get paid for it.”

The 37-year-old Fury had called it quits shortly afterlosing to Oleksandr Usykin December 2024 for a second time — his only two professional defeats.

Will Fury get another title shot?

Usyk holds the WBC, WBA and IBF titles and at age 39 has indicated he only has a few fights left in him. TheUkrainian’s next bout, though, has taken everyone by surprise — he’s set to face kickboxing star Rico Verhoeven in May at the Pyramids of Giza in Egypt.

Also in May, WBO title holderFabio Wardley faces Daniel Duboisin Manchester.

Usyk told The Associated Pressin a recent interview he foresees a trilogy bout with the charismatic Englishman: “In my head, Tyson Fury, it’s the last dance.”

In their first meeting, Fury had lost his WBC title to Usykvia split decisionin May 2024. The rematch was a unanimous decision for Usyk.

What about Anthony Joshua?

Fury (34-2-1, 24 KOs), if he can take care of business Saturday, has his sights set on Joshua, telling DAZN: “That’s the fight we’re looking to make next.”

The 36-year-old Joshua had called out Fury afterbreaking Jake Paul's jawin a stoppage victory in December. Days later, though, Joshua was involved in afatal car crashin Nigeria. He was a passenger in the vehicle and two of his close friends were killed.

Fury has said the tragedy is part of whatmotivated himto come out of retirement.

Joshua appears set to resume fighting. Last weekend, he attended the Deontay Wilder vs. Derek Chisora bout in London and had a brief exchange with Wilder afterthe American beat Chisora.

Does Makhmudov wrestle bears?

The 36-year-old Makhmudov (21-2, 19 KOs) has created some buzz by posting a video that showed him wrestling a bear. He explained in a Feb. 21 social media post that “the goal was to overcome the threshold of fear and learn to control yourself in critical situations."

Makhmudov hails from the Russian southern republic ofDagestanbut lives in Canada. His most recent fight was a 12-round unanimous decision over Dave Allen in October.

Makhmudov's left eye was swollen shut in a loss to Guido Vianello in 2024. He was felled by Agit Kabayel's body shots in a fourth-round stoppage in 2023.

Conor Benn vs. Regis Prograis

Conor Benn (24-1, 14 KOs) returns to Tottenham after two middleweight slugfests there against Chris Eubank Jr. in 2025. He lost the first one butdominated the rematchin November.

In the highlight of Saturday's undercard, the Briton faces Regis Prograis in a bout at a catchweight of 150 lbs. The 37-year-old Prograis (30-3, 24 KOs) is a former two-time world champion at super lightweight (140 lbs).

Both men are hoping for a title shot later this year. The 29-year-old Benn has traded verbal jabs withWBC welterweight champion Ryan Garcia.

How to watch

The event begins at 7 p.m. local time (2 p.m. ET) and is available onNetflix.

Fury's ring walk is expected at 10:30 p.m. local time (5:30 p.m. ET), about one hour after Benn vs. Prograis.

John Carlson always wanted a hat trick. The Ducks defenseman finally got one in his 17th NHL season

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — John Carlson played 1,156 regular-season games and 137 more Stanley Cup playoff contests in his 17 NHL seasons before he finally got his first hat trick.

Sharks Ducks Hockey

The steady defenseman would never list a three-goal game as a true aspiration, but Carlson was still thrilled to do it Thursday night — particularly because it came in a vital victory for his new team's playoff aspirations.

The 36-year-old Carlson said he literally couldn't remember his last pre-NHL hat trick after he fired three goals past the San Jose Sharksduring the Ducks' 6-1 win, which snapped a six-game losing streak and greatly improved Anaheim's chances of ending its seven-year postseason drought.

“I’ve seen a lot (of hat tricks) in my day, and always was a little bit jealous,” Carlson said with a grin.

Indeed, Carlson witnessed plenty of multigoal barrages during his long tenure with the Washington Capitals. That'll happen when you play nearly 17 seasons alongside the greatest goal-scorer in NHL history: Alex Ovechkin has 34 career hat tricks, including 26 since Carlson's debut with the Caps as a teenager in late 2009.

But Carlson has been a steady contributor on both ends of the ice throughout his NHL career, and he had been a major factor forhis new team in Anaheimeven before his third goal sealed a big win. His shot sent a shower of hats onto the Honda Center ice with 5:57 to play in celebration of only the fourth hat trick by a defenseman in Ducks history, and the first since 2018.

“It was great,” Carlson said. “I’ve obviously always wanted one. I think it was a good game to do it in, a home game. The crowd was great tonight from puck drop, and I think we just kept feeding on that and played a really good game.”

Carlson became the third defenseman in NHL history to record a hat trick after his 36th birthday, joining Mathieu Schneider and Nicklas Lidstrom, who was 40 years old when he accomplished the feat on Dec. 15, 2010. Only Lidstrom (1,442) played more games among NHL defensemen than Carlson before getting that inaugural trick.

Carlson has 12 points in 13 games since joining the Ducks, whoacquired him at the trade deadlineto shore up the back end on one of the league's worst defensive teams. Carlson has overcome the first jersey change of his NHL career and the midseason disruption of his family's life to fit in well on the West Coast, providing much-needed veteran poise while improving the Ducks' mediocre power play, which produced his two third-period goals.

“He comes in and he’s an amazing player,” said center Leo Carlsson, who opened the scoring with an impressive drive to the net for his 28th goal. “Great person, too. He helps us a lot, so nothing but amazing things to say about him.”

After his hat trick, Carlson has 14 goals this season between Washington and Anaheim, three off his career high from the 2021-22 season.

Carlson got his first goal against the Sharks in the first periodon a 97.47 mph slap shot— the hardest shot that resulted in a goal for the Ducks all season long.

He scored two more power-play goals 3 1/2 minutes apart in the third period, both on heavy shots. Anaheim's power play had been 1 for 15 over the previous four games, dropping to 25th in the league.

“I thought he’s got the presence to shoot from the top,” coach Joel Quenneville said. “He’s got good play recognition, and the power play needed that.”

Two days after the Ducks were booed off the ice by their home fansduring a 5-0 loss to Nashville, they dominated the rival Sharks — another young, hungry team with playoff aspirations.

Anaheim's victory left it in third place in the Pacific Division with 89 points, but just one behind Edmonton up in first place, where the Ducks had been for a full month before dropping back in the past week.

With just three games left, Carlson is confident the Ducks can pick up enough points to get him to the Stanley Cup playoffs for the 15th time in a career that included a championship in 2018.

“Building that mentality, reaching back for a picture or a memory of (good) starts, those things are all good to have at this point in the year,” Carlson said.
